An outpost is a distant or remote settlement or station established to project a presence, monitor an area, or support operations. It is usually smaller and less autonomous than a full base and may be temporary or semi-permanent, depending on strategic or logistical needs.

In military contexts, outposts serve reconnaissance, surveillance, and defense functions. They extend a force’s line of communication, provide early warning, and deter incursions by asserting a foothold in contested or sparsely settled terrain. Outposts commonly rely on limited infrastructure, periodic resupply, and rapid reinforcement options rather than independent administration.

They may function as logistics hubs, gateways for travel, or bases for field teams, often with agreements governing sovereignty and access.

In space exploration, space outposts or planetary bases describe small, self-sustaining facilities designed for research, observation, and infrequent transit. They may operate on orbit or on the surface of a moon or planet and rely on life support, power, and radiation shielding.

History shows the term applied to colonial frontier stations, fur trade posts, and military garrisons that extended the reach of empires. Today, modern outposts emphasize sustainability, autonomy, and resilience to operate in isolation for extended periods.
