A frontier is a boundary or transition zone between territories, cultures, or states that separates the known from the unknown or developed from less developed areas. It can refer to geographic areas at the edge of settled or governed lands, as well as to conceptual boundaries such as the frontier of scientific knowledge. Frontiers are often characterized by movement, exploration, and interaction among diverse groups, as well as by contest over control of resources and space.

Historically, the term has been prominent in discussions of settlement and expansion. In the United States, the frontier described the zone west of the settled eastern states during the 18th and 19th centuries, where settlers encountered Indigenous peoples, ecosystems, and new political arrangements. The frontier shaped policy, law, and identity, and was later analyzed by historians through the Turner Thesis, which framed the frontier as a force in American democracy and development.

Frontier regions are not simply margins but dynamic zones of exchange, conflict, and negotiation. A frontier may function as a buffer or contact zone between empires or cultures, a borderland with its own institutions, or a contested space that is not fully incorporated into any one political jurisdiction. The term is sometimes used loosely to describe any edge area, from colonial frontiers to urban peripheries.

In contemporary usage, frontiers extend beyond geography. The idea of a space frontier applies to outer space, deep-sea or cyber frontiers, and to markets and technologies considered at the cutting edge. In economics and policy, frontier markets denote economies that are less integrated into global markets and carry higher risk and potential growth.
