Onderkasten are the lower components of a kitchen cabinet system, installed on the floor beneath the countertop. They form the base of a kitchen and provide storage space for cookware, utensils, and pantry items. In Dutch and European cabinetry they are typically paired with bovenkasten (upper cabinets) to create a complete solution.

Base cabinets are usually constructed from particleboard or MDF, finished with laminate, veneer, or melamine, with edge banding to protect against moisture. Doors can be hinged or include drawers, and many systems offer soft-close hardware. They come in various widths and configurations to fit different layouts; standard depth is around 60 cm and height around 86-90 cm excluding the countertop.

Common configurations include single- and double-door units, drawers, pull-out organizers, and corner bases or tall pantry modules for additional storage. They are designed to accommodate built-in appliances such as dishwashers or ovens, which may be installed within or beside the cabinet run.

Installation and use: onderkasten are installed to be level and are anchored to the wall, with a toe kick at the base to allow space for the feet and to simplify cleaning. The countertop rests on top of the base cabinets, sometimes with an overhang.

Materials and maintenance: the choice of finish affects durability and moisture resistance; frequent cleaning with a mild detergent is advised, and hardware should be checked and tightened periodically. Veneered or laminated surfaces require care to prevent chipping and water damage.

These cabinets are ubiquitous in modern kitchens and are available in many colors, textures, and hardware options, enabling both practical storage and aesthetic cohesion.
