Natural Resource Management (NRM) is the interdisciplinary field concerned with the sustainable use, protection, and stewardship of natural resources such as land, water, soils, forests, biodiversity, and minerals. It seeks to balance ecological integrity with social and economic needs, integrating science, policy, and governance to guide decision making.

Practice in NRM covers assessment, planning, and implementation at local, regional, and national scales. Key activities include resource inventories, zoning and land-use planning, watershed or landscape-level management, sustainable harvesting, conservation, and rehabilitation. Integrated approaches such as Integrated Water Resources Management and ecosystem-based management are commonly used to coordinate multiple resources and actors. Participatory processes, capacity-building, and transparent monitoring are central to legitimacy and adaptive decision making.

NRM involves a diverse mix of actors: governments and regulatory agencies, local communities and Indigenous groups, farmers and resource users, non-governmental organizations, researchers, and private sector stakeholders. Effective governance relies on clear rights and responsibilities, appropriate incentives, data sharing, conflict resolution mechanisms, and long-term financing.

Outcomes aim to secure ecosystem services—clean water, fertile soils, carbon storage, biodiversity, and recreational opportunities—while supporting livelihoods and economic development. Successful NRM reduces degradation, improves resilience to climate stress, and enables sustainable production of goods and services over time.

Challenges include governance fragmentation, policy inconsistency across sectors, limited funding, weak data and monitoring, and gaps in enforcement. Competing objectives, land tenure insecurity, and cross-border resource management can complicate coordination and undermine sustainability efforts. Climate change intensifies these pressures and requires adaptive, flexible strategies.
