Méhösszenyomódás is a Hungarian term that translates to uterine prolapse or falling of the womb. It is a condition where the pelvic floor muscles and ligaments that support the uterus weaken and stretch, allowing the uterus to descend into or even protrude from the vagina. This weakening can be caused by various factors, including pregnancy and childbirth, particularly difficult deliveries, large babies, or multiple births.

Other contributing factors include aging, menopause, chronic coughing, heavy lifting, obesity, and genetic predisposition. Symptoms can vary depending on the severity of the prolapse and may include a feeling of heaviness or fullness in the pelvis, a bulge in the vagina, lower back pain, urinary incontinence (stress incontinence or urge incontinence), difficulty with bowel movements, and discomfort or pain during sexual intercourse.

Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination, where a healthcare provider can assess the extent of the prolapse. Treatment options depend on the severity of the condition and the patient's symptoms. Mild cases may be managed with pelvic floor exercises (Kegels), lifestyle modifications such as weight loss and avoiding heavy lifting, and the use of a pessary, a device inserted into the vagina to support the uterus. More severe cases may require surgical intervention to repair the weakened pelvic floor muscles and ligaments and restore the uterus to its proper position. Surgical options can include vaginal repair or abdominal surgery.
