Multiobjektiiviseen is a Finnish adjective used to describe problems, methods, or analyses that involve multiple objectives to be optimized simultaneously. In optimization, multiobjective optimization deals with finding solutions when several objective functions must be considered together rather than a single criterion.

A typical formulation involves maximizing or minimizing a vector of objectives f(x) = (f1(x), ..., fm(x)) subject to x belonging to a feasible set X. Because objectives often conflict, there is not a single best solution. Instead, the concept of Pareto optimality is used: a point x* is Pareto optimal if no other feasible x improves one objective without worsening at least one other. The collection of Pareto-optimal solutions forms the Pareto frontier or efficient frontier, representing the trade-offs among objectives.

Solution approaches are broadly categorized as scalarization and Pareto-based methods. Scalarization converts the multiobjective problem into a single-objective one, using techniques such as weighted sums, goal programming, or lexicographic ordering. A posteriori methods search for a diverse set of Pareto-optimal solutions after solving multiple single-objective problems. Evolutionary algorithms, such as NSGA-II, are popular for generating a spread of Pareto-optimal solutions in complex or nonconvex landscapes. Interactive methods incorporate decision-maker preferences during the search.

Applications of multiobjektiiviseen approaches appear across engineering design, logistics and operations, energy systems, environmental planning, finance, and many fields where balancing competing goals is essential. Challenges include handling nonconvexities, high-dimensional objective spaces, conflicting preferences, scaling differences among objectives, and computational demands. The term is used in Finnish contexts to denote problems or methods that explicitly address multiple objectives.
