Motor controllers are devices or systems that regulate the operation of electric motors by adjusting voltage, current, and/or frequency to control speed, torque, and direction. They may be standalone units or integrated into drive systems and protection schemes. By delivering controlled electrical energy and monitoring motor behavior, controllers help optimize performance, efficiency, and safety across a range of applications.

Common categories include DC motor controllers and AC motor controllers. DC controllers modulate current through choppers or transistor-based switches (for example, H-bridge circuits) to achieve desired speeds. AC controllers typically use variable frequency drives or thyristor/inverter-based inverters to adjust motor frequency and voltage. Specialized controllers exist for brushless DC motors, stepper motors, and servo systems.

Control methods include open-loop and closed-loop strategies. Closed-loop systems use feedback from sensors such as encoders, resolvers, or tachometers to regulate speed or torque. Pulse-width modulation (PWM) is widely used to shape voltage or current for both DC and AC motors. Other techniques include voltage, current, and frequency control, regenerative braking, and soft-start to reduce mechanical stress.

Core components typically include power electronics (transistors, diodes, and filters), heat management, energy storage (capacitors or inductors), and control electronics (microcontrollers, digital signal processors, or programmable logic controllers) with interfaces for sensors and control signals. Communication protocols may include analog interfaces, CAN, Modbus, or Ethernet in modern drive systems.

Applications span industrial automation, robotics, electric vehicles, appliances, and HVAC. Motor controllers incorporate protection features such as overcurrent, overvoltage, thermal monitoring, short-circuit protection, and fault diagnostics. Effective design also considers isolation, EMI/EMC, and conformance with standards for adjustable speed drive systems.
