Maskinautomation, or machine automation, refers to the use of control systems, sensors, actuators, and software to operate machinery with minimal human intervention. It encompasses electromechanical devices and software-based control to perform repetitive, hazardous, or precision tasks reliably and efficiently.

Key technologies include programmable logic controllers (PLCs), distributed control systems (DCS), and embedded controllers; human-machine interfaces (HMIs); industrial robots; variable frequency drives and servo motors; sensors (position, temperature, pressure, vision); and industrial communication networks such as Ethernet/IP, ProfiNet, Modbus, and OPC UA.

Control strategies commonly employed are discrete process control, servo and motion control, PID loops, state estimation, and model-based control. Modern maskinautomation often uses a layered architecture with field devices, control layers, and enterprise software, enabling data collection, diagnostics, and optimization. Standards such as IEC 61131-3 for PLC programming and safety standards (IEC 61508, ISO 13849) guide development and risk management.

Applications span manufacturing and processing industries, including automotive, consumer electronics, food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, packaging, and energy. Maskinautomation can improve productivity, product quality, consistency, and worker safety, while enabling remote monitoring and predictive maintenance.

Common challenges include integration of diverse equipment, cybersecurity, interoperability, and ongoing maintenance of legacy systems. The field continues to evolve with advances in cloud-based analytics, artificial intelligence for process optimization, and increased use of collaborative robots (cobots) in manufacturing environments.
