Luxatie, commonly known as dislocation, refers to the displacement of a bone from its normal position within a joint. This occurs when the articulating surfaces of the bones in a joint are no longer in proper contact. Luxations are most common in the shoulder, elbow, and fingers, although they can affect any joint in the body. The cause is typically a sudden force or trauma that exceeds the joint's normal range of motion, such as a fall, sports injury, or direct impact. In some cases, underlying conditions like ligament laxity or previous injuries can predispose an individual to dislocations.

Symptoms of a luxatie include severe pain at the affected joint, visible deformity or unnatural shape, swelling, bruising, and an inability to move the limb or joint. The joint may also feel unstable or "give way." Diagnosis is usually made through a physical examination and confirmed with imaging techniques like X-rays, which can also identify any associated fractures. Treatment involves the reduction of the dislocated joint, which means carefully manipulating the bones back into their correct alignment. This is often performed by a healthcare professional under sedation or anesthesia. Following reduction, the joint is typically immobilized with a splint or cast to allow the surrounding ligaments and tissues to heal. Rehabilitation exercises are crucial to restore strength, flexibility, and stability to the joint and prevent future dislocations. Recurrent dislocations may require surgical intervention to repair damaged ligaments or correct underlying structural abnormalities.
