Two main approaches exist. Human captioners use stenography or CART (Communication Access Real-time Translation) to produce accurate captions with proper punctuation and speaker labels, typically with some latency for transcription and quality checks. Automated live captioning relies on real-time speech recognition software to generate captions immediately, offering lower cost and instant results but usually at higher error rates and with more punctuation and capitalization issues.

Workflow usually involves capturing audio, generating captions, syncing text with video, and displaying captions on screen. In broadcasts, there is often an editor who reviews and corrects the captions after or during the event. For streaming and online platforms, captions may be generated live and then post-edited before final publication.

Applications include television and radio broadcasts, live sports, conferences, webinars, lectures, court reporting contexts, and accessibility services at venues. In education, live captioning supports inclusive learning and participation for students with hearing loss.

Technology combines specialized hardware such as stenography keyboards with captioning software, as well as automated speech recognition systems integrated into streaming platforms. Some systems support multiple languages and provide streaming captions with low latency, though quality varies with accent, background noise, and technical vocabulary.
