This occurs when the veins in the legs, particularly the valves within them, are not functioning correctly. These valves are designed to prevent blood from flowing backward, but in venous insufficiency, they weaken or become damaged, allowing blood to pool in the lower extremities.

The symptoms of laskimoperäisille can vary in severity. Common signs include aching or heaviness in the legs, particularly after standing or sitting for extended periods. Swelling, especially in the ankles and feet, is another hallmark symptom, often worsening as the day progresses. Visible varicose veins, which are enlarged, twisted superficial veins, are frequently associated with this condition. In more advanced stages, skin changes can occur, such as discoloration (often a brownish hue), dryness, itching, and eventually, venous ulcers, which are slow-healing sores.

Several factors can contribute to the development of laskimoperäisille. Age is a significant risk factor, as vein walls and valves tend to weaken over time. Genetics also plays a role, with a family history of venous disease increasing susceptibility. Prolonged standing or sitting, obesity, pregnancy, and a history of deep vein thrombosis (blood clots in the legs) are also commonly cited causes or contributing factors. While laskimoperäisille is generally not life-threatening, it can significantly impact quality of life and, if left untreated, lead to more serious complications.
