Korpuslinguistik is a subfield of linguistics that uses corpora for the scientific study of language. A corpus is a large, structured collection of authentic texts, usually in electronic form. These texts can be written or spoken and are typically analyzed using computational methods. The primary goal of korpuslinguistik is to provide empirical evidence for linguistic theories and to describe language as it is actually used, rather than as prescriptive rules might suggest.

The development of korpuslinguistik has been closely linked to advances in computing power and digital text storage. Early corpora were relatively small and manually analyzed, but modern corpora can contain billions of words and are analyzed with sophisticated software. Key applications of korpuslinguistik include lexicography, where it informs dictionary definitions and examples; language teaching, by providing authentic materials and insights into common learner errors; and computational linguistics, by serving as training data for natural language processing systems. It helps answer questions about language variation across different genres, dialects, and time periods, offering a data-driven approach to understanding the complexities of human communication.
