Common types include snap-fit joints, detent mechanisms, and push-button latches. Snap-fit joints rely on flexible members that deform to pass over a feature and then snap back to hold parts together, producing a characteristic click. Detent mechanisms use a spring-loaded element, such as a ball or plunger, that sits in notches or grooves to provide distinct positions and an audible or tactile click. Push-button latches combine actuation and a detent to create a reliable hold and a clear feedback when released or locked.

Other variations include cam and follower systems that produce a click as the follower moves over a crest, and magnetic click mechanisms where alignment and engagement generate feedback without mechanical interlock. Materials most commonly used are plastics and metals, sometimes with inserts, coatings, or lubricants to balance durability and feel.
