Idiopathic is a medical term used to describe a disease, condition, or symptom for which a cause has not been identified after appropriate evaluation. The word originates from Greek idios meaning “one’s own” and pathos meaning “suffering” or “disease.” In practice, idiopathic indicates that the origin is unknown at present, rather than proven to be caused by a known factor.

Idiopathic is a descriptor rather than a diagnosis. It is used when a patient’s history, physical examination, and standard diagnostic tests fail to reveal a causative factor. It does not imply that no cause exists, only that it has not yet been found or proven. Because medical knowledge evolves, conditions once labeled idiopathic may later be reclassified if new etiologies are discovered. The label highlights diagnostic uncertainty and a need for ongoing assessment, while guiding clinicians to rule out known secondary causes and consider emerging evidence as science advances.
