Historicallinguistic, more commonly referred to as historical linguistics, is the scholarly field concerned with language change over time. It investigates how languages diverge from common ancestors, reconstructs unattested ancestor languages, and maps the genetic relationships among language families. The field combines philology, philological criticism, and linguistic theory to understand how phonology, morphology, syntax, and lexicon shift across generations.

Core methods include the comparative method, which identifies regular sound correspondences and reconstructs proto-forms; internal reconstruction, which infers older structures from within a single language; and analyses of borrowings and language contact. Researchers also study semantic change, grammaticalization, and sociolinguistic factors that influence language evolution. Chronology is approached through dated texts, historical records, and, in some cases, computational models that estimate divergence times.

Sources of evidence range from ancient inscriptions and manuscripts to bilingual texts and oral tradition, as well as toponymy and loanword patterns. The work often aims to place languages on a tree or network model to reflect their historical relationships, such as reconstructing Proto-Indo-European or tracing the development of Romance languages from Latin.

Subfields and applications cover phonology, morphology, syntax, and lexicon, as well as language contact, pidgins and creoles, and sociolinguistic aspects of language change. Historical linguistics also intersects with archaeology, anthropology, and digital humanities, using databases, phylogenetic methods, and large corpora to test hypotheses about language evolution.

Prominent figures include early pioneers who proposed language families and proto-languages, as well as later scholars who systematized the comparative method. Limitations include incomplete data, dating uncertainties, and distinguishing true cognates from borrowings or chance resemblances.
