A protolanguage is a hypothetical ancestor from which a group of languages is believed to have descended. It is not directly attested in historical records but is reconstructed by linguists to account for regular patterns observed across related languages. Protolanguages aim to explain shared vocabulary, phonological correspondences, and grammatical features among the descendant languages.

Reconstruction relies on the comparative method, which identifies systematic sound changes and cognate words across related languages. By working backward, researchers propose phoneme inventories, core vocabulary, and morphological structures that could have existed in the ancestor. Internal reconstruction, based on patterns within a language family, can supplement the broader reconstruction. Protolanguages typically have no surviving written evidence; conclusions rest on the analysis of multilingual data and may be revised with new findings.

Dating protolanguages is inherently uncertain. Estimates vary and depend on methodological assumptions. For example, Proto-Indo-European is commonly placed several thousand BCE, while other protolanguages such as Proto-Austronesian or Proto-Uralic are dated to earlier or later periods within broad ranges. Interpreting dates often involves integrating archaeology, genetics, and linguistics, and remains debated.

Prominent examples include Proto-Indo-European, Proto-Austronesian, Proto-Dravidian, Proto-Uralic, and Proto-Bantu. These reconstructions illuminate deep connections within language families and shed light on historical contact, migration, and cultural evolution. Critics note that protolanguage reconstructions are inherently provisional and may reflect current data and assumptions as much as past linguistic realities, with some degree of uncertainty about precise forms and features.
