They are typically fast-flowing, with steep gradients and cold, well-oxygenated water. The streambed is often gravel or cobble, producing riffles and runs that sustain high dissolved oxygen levels and dynamic habitat structure.

Geographically, hillstreams occur in upland regions worldwide, from temperate mountain ranges to tropical highlands. They often drain relatively small catchments and are influenced by forested or shrub-dominated banks that shade the water and limit sediment input, helping maintain clarity and temperature stability. Their position in the landscape makes them important connectors between headwater ecosystems and downstream rivers.

Ecologically, hillstreams host communities adapted to strong currents and variable flows. Invertebrate groups such as mayflies, stoneflies, and caddisflies are common, providing an important food base for fish. Rheophilic fish, including species like brook trout in North America and various mountain-dwelling char species in Eurasia, may inhabit these habitats. The rocky substrate and rapid flow favor periphyton and specialized macrobenthic organisms, while limiting fine-sediment accumulation.

Hydrology is characterized by high energy and variability. Discharge can fluctuate with season and weather, and events like snowmelt or intense rain can swiftly alter habitat. Water quality is often sensitive to sedimentation and nutrient inputs.

Threats and conservation efforts focus on protecting riparian buffers, restoring gravel-bed habitats, and maintaining cold-water connectivity to support native communities.
