Fastflowing is an adjective used to describe water moving at high velocity, commonly in rivers, streams, channels, or other open-water environments. In hydrology and geomorphology, fastflowing water is typically distinguished from slower flows by higher kinetic energy and greater turbulence. The term is widely used in natural settings and in engineering to describe flow regimes that influence channel morphology and sediment transport.

Fastflowing water arises where there is a steep hydraulic gradient, narrow or irregular channels, rough bed surfaces, or high discharge. These conditions increase shear stress at the water–bed interface, promoting turbulence and sediment entrainment. Fastflowing sections often feature rapids, whitewater, and aeration, and can be highly erosive to banks and beds.

Velocity and flow rate are central measurements for fastflowing regimes. Flow velocity is typically expressed in meters per second, and discharge is the product of cross-sectional area and average velocity. Hydrologists use instruments such as current meters, acoustic Doppler devices, and electromagnetic sensors to quantify rapid flows and to model their behavior.

Ecological and safety implications accompany fastflowing water. The high oxygenation and dynamic substrates can support specialized aquatic communities, but fast flows can also displace organisms and alter habitats. For humans, fastflowing water presents significant hazards to swimmers and recreational users, and rescue operations require swift-water training and precautions.

Examples of fastflowing environments include rapids in mountain rivers, canyon streams, and flood channels during high discharge events.
