Whitewater refers to sections of a river where the current is rapid and turbulent due to a combination of steep gradient, confined channel, and obstacles such as rocks and ledges. The water becomes aerated, forming waves, splashes, holes, and breaking crests that give the characteristic frothy appearance. Whitewater conditions vary with flow, season, and river morphology and can change quickly as water levels rise or fall.

Rapids are commonly described using a river difficulty scale. The International Scale of River Difficulty rates rapids from Class I (easy) to Class VI (extremely difficult and potentially life-threatening). Higher classes indicate increased rapids features, such as steep drops, large waves, intense hydraulics, and constrained channels. Some rating systems include Class VI+ for near-impossible sections.

Common whitewater activities include rafting, kayaking, and canoeing. Equipment typically includes personal flotation devices, helmets, paddles, and appropriate boats, along with wetsuits or drysuits in cold conditions and rescue gear. Commercial trips are often led by trained guides who assess hazards, scout rapids, and implement safety protocols.

Whitewater occurs most often in mountainous or high-gradient regions where snowmelt and rain drive sustained flow. It can also be produced by dam releases. Management of whitewater areas involves environmental stewardship, access considerations, and, in regulated rivers, permit systems for guided trips.
