Hedelmäkärpänen, scientifically known as Drosophila melanogaster, is a small fly commonly found around ripe or fermenting fruits and vegetables. These insects are widely used in scientific research, particularly in genetics and developmental biology, due to their short life cycle, easily observable traits, and relatively simple genome. Their name literally translates to "fruit fly" in Finnish.

Adult fruit flies are typically small, about 3-4 millimeters long, with red eyes and a yellowish-brown body. They are attracted to the smell of yeast and sugars, which are abundant in decaying organic matter. This makes them a common nuisance in kitchens, especially during warmer months when fruit is left out.
