They provide a relatively bouncy and predictable ball rebound, with speed and playing characteristics that can vary by the specific coating, color, and whether a cushioning layer is included. Surfaces may range from unpadded to cushioned designs that absorb some impact, aiming to reduce stress on players’ joints. The exact feel of a hardcourt can differ between venues due to varying resurfacing intervals, coatings, and maintenance practices.

Construction typically involves a solid base of asphalt or concrete, a sub-base for stability, and a top wear layer of acrylic polymers.
