Polyesterbased refers to materials derived from polyesters or containing polyester segments. Polyesters are formed by condensation of diols and dicarboxylic acids (or by transesterification of esters), resulting in ester linkages along the polymer backbone. The term covers a broad family, including poly(ethylene terephthalate) PET, poly(butylene terephthalate) PBT, poly(trimethylene terephthalate) PTT, and various blends and copolymers, as well as bio-based polyesters such as polyethylene furanoate (PEF).

Polyesters generally exhibit good mechanical strength, abrasion resistance, and chemical resistance, with properties tunable by chemical structure and crystallinity. They are typically thermoplastics, often semi-crystalline, which influences stiffness, clarity, barrier performance, and melting behavior. PET offers high rigidity and gas barrier properties; PBT provides higher heat resistance and chemical resistance, making it common in engineering applications.

Manufacturing and processing include melt polymerization, extrusion, injection molding, blow molding, and fiber spinning. Polyester fibers form textiles and nonwovens; PET is widely used in beverage bottles and film; PBT and related polyesters serve as engineering plastics for automotive parts, electronics, and consumer goods. Polyester resins are also used in composites and coatings.

Environmental considerations focus on recyclability: PET recycling streams are established for bottles and packaging, with both mechanical and chemical recycling options. Polyester waste can contribute to microplastics if not managed properly. Life-cycle assessments vary with feedstock (petrochemical vs bio-based) and end-of-life treatment. Research continues to improve recyclability, lower energy use, and expand sustainable polyester options.
