Resurfacing is the process of renewing the surface of an object or area by applying a new surface layer or by removing and replacing the existing layer to restore appearance, texture, or function. The term is used across several fields, especially civil engineering and dermatology, and can describe both infrastructure maintenance and cosmetic procedures.

In civil engineering and road construction, resurfacing (often called an overlay) aims to restore smoothness and extend the life of pavements. It typically involves removing the worn surface through milling and applying a new asphalt concrete or concrete layer. Resurfacing does not usually fix major structural problems beneath the surface; if the base is compromised, methods such as reconstruction or deeper rehabilitation may be required. In dermatology, skin resurfacing refers to procedures that remove or ablate the outer skin layers to reduce wrinkles, scars, or sun damage. Common methods include chemical peels, laser resurfacing (including fractional and non-fractional CO2 or Er:YAG lasers), and dermabrasion. Outcomes, downtime, and risks depend on the method and the patient’s skin type, with potential side effects including temporary redness, swelling, pigment changes, or scarring.

Other contexts include manufacturing and finishing, where resurfacing can involve reconditioning worn surfaces through re-machining, coating, or polishing to restore performance. In all cases, suitability and expected results depend on material condition, usage, and goals.
