Haravoinnin is the activity of raking leaves and other debris from lawns, gardens, streets, and other outdoor areas. In Finnish, haravointi is the process, and haravoinnin is the genitive form used in phrases like "haravoinnin tarve" or "haravoinnin vaikutukset." The practice is common in temperate regions with deciduous trees, especially during autumn.

Purpose and scope: The primary goal is to restore a clean surface, reduce moisture buildup, prevent mold or pests, and prepare spaces for winter. Haravointi is performed by households as a regular garden task and also as part of municipal maintenance of parks, schoolyards, and streets. While removal of leaves is typical, some leaves can be composted or mulched and returned to the soil.

Tools and methods: The standard tool is a harava (rake). Common variants include metalliharava (steel rake) for tough clumps and muovinen or kevyempi harava (plastic or lightweight rake) for lighter cleanup. For large areas, power tools such as leaf blowers or lawn mowers with mulching capability are used. Techniques include gathering leaves into piles for disposal, composting, or mulching leaves back onto the lawn. In some cases, leaves are left in place to decompose and enrich the soil.

Disposal and environment: Municipal guidelines often require bagging yard waste for collection, though many gardeners compost or mulch leaves. Mulching and returning organic matter to the soil can improve soil structure, while excessive raking that removes nutrients can affect soil health.
