Blowers are devices that move air or gas and, in many designs, generate pressure above ambient to push air through ducts or processes. They are used to provide ventilation, combustion air, fume extraction, and process air in industrial systems. In common usage, blowers are often differentiated from fans by their relative ability to develop static pressure, although the terms are sometimes used interchangeably by manufacturers.

Centrifugal blowers (radial blowers) use an impeller to accelerate air outward from the center. The resulting velocity is converted to pressure as air passes through a diffuser or scroll. They offer higher pressure than axial fans and are used in heating, ventilation, air conditioning, dust collection, and pneumatic conveying.

Positive-displacement blowers move a fixed volume of air per revolution, producing high pressure at relatively low flow. Examples include Roots blowers and vane-type blowers. They are used where a stable, moderate flow at higher pressure is needed, such as wastewater aeration, chemical processing, and gas handling.

Inline or compact blowers and certain axial units are designed for ducted systems and higher-pressure applications, often integrated with filters and sound dampening. Leaf blowers are consumer devices that produce a strong airstream for cleaning outdoor areas; they are not generally used for enclosed process air.

Key considerations include efficiency, noise, and maintenance. Most blowers run on electric motors or internal combustion engines; variable frequency drives improve efficiency and control. Regular inspection of bearings, seals, and impellers, along with clean ducts, helps sustain performance.
