The process starts with a base fabric stretched on a frame. The tufting gun pushes yarns through the backing to form a pile, which can be left as loops or cut to create a cut-pile surface. After tufting, a latex adhesive is applied to secure the pile, and a secondary backing—often cloth or another material—is added for stability. Finishing steps may include trimming and edge binding.

Materials and variants commonly used in handtufted rugs include wool, cotton, and synthetic fibers such as polyester or nylon. Pile height can range from low to high, and backings vary but frequently involve cotton or jute with a latex layer. The result is a versatile rug that can imitate many design styles, from solid colors to complex patterns.

Compared with hand-knotted rugs, handtufted pieces are typically faster to produce and more affordable. They are generally considered mid-range in durability and value; while suitable for many rooms, they may wear more quickly in high-traffic areas and can shed more than some hand-knotted rugs.
