The appearance of handförhårdnad can range from a smooth, slightly raised area to a rough, thickened patch. The color may be slightly paler or yellowish compared to the surrounding skin. The exact location and extent depend on the nature of the activity causing the friction. For instance, individuals who engage in manual labor, play musical instruments, or participate in sports often develop calluses on specific parts of their hands.

While often considered a nuisance, handförhårdnad serves a protective function, preventing blisters and abrasions from forming during repetitive tasks. However, excessive callus buildup can sometimes lead to discomfort, cracking, or even pain if the skin becomes too dry and inflexible. Regular moisturizing and gentle exfoliation can help manage the condition, though it is important to avoid aggressive removal that could compromise the skin's natural protection.
