Glider license is a formal authorization issued by a national aviation authority that allows an individual to operate a sailplane (glider). Licenses are country-specific in name and scope but share a common purpose: to certify knowledge of aerodynamics, weather, airspace, and safe flight operations, and to demonstrate the skill required to launch, fly, and land a glider.

Naming and structure vary. Some jurisdictions issue a dedicated glider license (sometimes called PPL(S) or GPL) or grant glider privileges as a rating or endorsement on a private pilot license. In many places, licensing can be separate from powered flight, or combined into a single licensing scheme (for example, a glider rating on a private pilot license).

Training typically includes theoretical knowledge such as air law, meteorology, navigation and aerodynamics; practical flight training covering pre-flight checks, tow or winch launch, soaring techniques, energy management, and emergency procedures; and a flight test with a licensing authority or approved examiner. Most programs also require a minimum number of supervised flights and hours, and a medical or fitness standard.

Common launch methods include aerotow and ground-based winch launches; cross-country navigation and weather decision making are often emphasized. Instructors may hold separate ratings, and additional credentials exist for self-launch capability, cross-country flying, or instructing others. Currency and renewal requirements generally include periodic flight reviews or revalidations.

From a user perspective, gliders are typically operated through flying clubs or accredited schools; the license enables participation in club flying, solo flights, and, depending on the jurisdiction, cross-border operations or participation in competitions.
