föreninger

Föreningar (plural of förening) are voluntary associations formed by individuals sharing a common interest. They are typically non-profit organizations that coordinate activities, represent members, and provide services or advocacy within a community.

Most föreningar are governed by stadgar (bylaws) and decisions are taken at a general meeting, known in Swedish as årsmöte. A board (styrelse) handles day-to-day management, and members elect officers and auditors. Accounting and reporting requirements vary with size and legal status.

Legally, a förening may exist as an informal association or register as a juridisk person to obtain formal legal personality. Registered associations can sue and be sued in their own name; unregistered ones rely on the actions of their members. Funding commonly comes from membership fees, donations, sponsorships, and public or private grants.

Common types include idrottsföreningar (sports clubs), kulturföreningar (cultural or artistic associations), hobby- and student associations, charitable or civic organizations, and professional associations.

Föreningar play a central role in civil society by enabling volunteering, social interaction, education, and local participation. They often collaborate with municipalities, schools, and other organizations to deliver activities and services.

Note: In Swedish, the standard plural is föreningar; föreningar is the correct spelling for "associations." The form föreninger is usually considered a misspelling.
