Föreningar

Föreningar are voluntary associations or societies formed by individuals who share a common interest, goal, or community purpose. They are a fundamental part of civil society in Sweden and can range from amateur sport clubs to cultural societies, humanitarian organizations, and professional or trade associations.

Formation and governance often begin with statutes (stadgar) that specify the association’s purpose, rules for membership, decision-making procedures, and how the organization is managed. The supreme decision-making body is usually the general meeting (årsmöte), where members vote on major issues and elect the board (styrelse). The board is responsible for daily operations and strategic direction, while volunteers or staff carry out activities. Membership terms, admission, and discipline are defined in the statutes.

Financing and accountability typically rely on member fees, donations, grants, and revenue from activities. Ideella föreningar (non-profit associations) commonly operate with a focus on mission rather than profit. Ekonomiska föreningar (economic associations) are more formal financial entities, often with stricter accounting and governance requirements, and they may have obligations to file annual accounts. Larger föreningar or those engaged in public or commercial activities may need registration with authorities and must adhere to applicable financial reporting standards.

Legal status and relation to other structures vary. Föreningar differ from stiftelser (foundations), which are endowed with assets and long-term aims, and from aktiebolag (limited companies), which pursue profit and have different liability and regulatory frameworks. Föreningar thus serve as a flexible, democratic model for collective action, community life, and voluntary work across diverse sectors in Sweden.
