Function key, or F-key, refers to a set of keyboard keys labeled F1 through F12 that are designed to trigger predefined actions by software or the operating system. Some keyboards extend this range to F13–F24. The exact behavior of each key depends on the program in use and the system configuration, making function keys a compact shortcut mechanism across applications.

Historically, function keys were introduced to provide quick access to commonly used commands without relying on the mouse. Over time they became common across operating systems and programs, with certain keys acquiring widely recognized roles. For example, F1 is frequently used to summon help, while F5 is commonly used to refresh a page or document. Other keys have context-specific uses in file managers, editors, and development environments. In web browsers, F12 is commonly mapped to developer tools, illustrating how function keys can adapt to varying workflows.

Hardware and configuration aspects influence how function keys behave. On many laptops and compact keyboards, the F-keys also control multimedia or hardware features (volume, brightness, playback) and require pressing an Fn modifier to access the traditional function-key actions. Some systems offer options in BIOS/UEFI or operating system settings to swap this behavior. macOS similarly treats function keys as hardware controls by default but can invert behavior via system preferences. Users can also remap F-keys with software tools to suit custom workflows.
