Fkeys

Fkeys, or function keys, are the keys labeled F1 through F12 located along the top edge of most keyboards. On many laptops and compact keyboards these keys may also serve as hardware controls (such as brightness, volume, or media playback) and require pressing a Fn key to access the traditional F1–F12 actions. The exact behavior of each F-key is not standardized; it is defined by the operating system, the active application, and, in some cases, user customization.

In typical use, F1 is commonly associated with help, F2 with renaming items, and F5 with refreshing or reloading content. The remaining keys have varying roles depending on software: F3 often initiates search, F10 can activate a menu bar, and F11 frequently toggles full-screen mode in web browsers. F12 is often used to open developer tools in browsers and many IDEs. Some applications assign special functions to certain F-keys, and some operating systems reserve them for system-wide actions (boot options, accessibility features, or hardware controls). Because mappings are application-specific, F-keys may behave differently across programs.

Platform differences and customization are common. In Windows, many programs expose F-key shortcuts directly, while macOS commonly treats F-row keys as hardware controls unless a preference is changed; on macOS you can enable “Use F1, F2, etc. as standard function keys” or press Fn to access the hardware functions. Linux desktop environments offer similar configurability. Users can often customize F-key behavior via application shortcuts or external keyboard software, including assigning macros to individual keys.
