Finishes glossy refer to surface coatings or treatments that yield a highly reflective, smooth, and shiny appearance. Glossy finishes maximize light reflection and create a glass-like surface, often described as high gloss. They are achieved with clear coats or pigmented coatings such as varnish, lacquer, polyurethane, epoxy, acrylic, or UV-curable systems. Gloss level is commonly quantified with gloss units (GU) at a standard angle, with high-gloss finishes typically exceeding 70 GU.

Applications include furniture, cabinetry, automotive paint, metal and plastic parts, flooring, ceramics, and architectural surfaces. Substrates must be well-prepared: clean, repaired, sanded and primed to minimize blemishes that show through the glossy layer. Application methods vary: brushing, spraying, or rolling; multiple coats with sanding between coats; curing times depend on product and environment. Glossy finishes can be clear or pigmented and may incorporate UV absorbers, hardeners, or anti-scratch additives.

Advantages of glossy finishes include visual appeal, ease of cleaning, and enhanced color contrast and depth. Disadvantages include a tendency to show dust, fingerprints, scratches, and orange peel more readily; they require meticulous surface preparation and maintenance and can be prone to chips or yellowing depending on the system. Care involves gentle cleaners and microfiber cloths, avoiding abrasive pads; repairs may require wet-sanding and re-coating. To achieve a different appearance, gloss levels can be adjusted with top-coats or by using satin or matte intermediates. Environmental considerations include VOC content and the availability of water-based, low-VOC, or UV-cured systems.
