Ensisuojan, or primary shielding, is the barrier between a radiation source and the occupied areas that is intended to absorb the majority of the radiation that would otherwise reach personnel. The primary shielding must be continuous and free of gaps or weak points to prevent direct exposure from the primary beam during normal operation and routine procedures.

Materials and construction commonly used for ensisuojan include concrete and high-density concrete, as well as lead for locations requiring higher attenuation. For viewing windows, leaded glass and specialized steel doors may be employed. The shielding thickness is expressed as lead equivalent (Pb eq) and is selected based on the energy spectrum of the radiation, the geometry of the installation, and the occupancy and use factors of adjacent spaces. Design often uses the HVL (half-value layer) concept and follows national and international guidelines to meet dose constraints and safety objectives.

Ensisuojan is part of an overall shielding system that also includes secondary shielding (toissuoja) to reduce leakage and scatter from the source, as well as penetrations for doors, cables, and ventilation. Proper detailing is required to maintain continuous protection across joints, penetrations, and access points.

Regulatory and safety context varies by country but typically involves adherence to international guidelines such as those from the ICRP and ISO standards, with national authorities providing requirements and oversight. In many jurisdictions, organizations must have shielding designs reviewed and approved by the competent authority and conduct periodic inspections and maintenance to ensure ongoing protection for workers and the public.
