Emfyseemasta is a medical condition characterized by the destruction of the alveoli, the tiny air sacs in the lungs. This damage leads to a loss of elasticity in the lungs, making it difficult to exhale. As the alveoli are damaged, they merge into larger, less efficient air spaces, reducing the surface area available for oxygen exchange. This results in shortness of breath, particularly during physical exertion.

The primary cause of emfyseemasta is long-term exposure to irritants, most commonly cigarette smoke. Other contributing factors include air pollution, chemical fumes, and genetic predispositions, such as alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency. Symptoms often develop gradually and may include chronic cough, wheezing, and increased mucus production. In advanced stages, individuals may experience significant weight loss and fatigue.

Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination, a review of medical history, and pulmonary function tests to assess lung capacity and airflow. Imaging studies like chest X-rays or CT scans can also help visualize lung damage. While emfyseemasta is not curable, treatments aim to manage symptoms, slow disease progression, and improve quality of life. These may include smoking cessation, medications to open airways, pulmonary rehabilitation, and in severe cases, oxygen therapy or lung transplantation.
