elastanspandex

Elastanspandex is a term used in the textile industry to describe fabrics that rely on elastane or spandex fibers to provide stretch and recovery. Because elastane and spandex refer to the same polyurethane-based polymer (elastane is the European naming convention, spandex the American one), elastanspandex typically signals a fabric in which these fibers are blended with other materials to achieve elasticity without sacrificing strength or durability.

Properties of elastanspandex fabrics include high elasticity, excellent recovery after deformation, and a comfortable, form-fitting feel. The level of stretch and recovery depends on the percentage of elastane in the fabric and the nature of the companion fiber, such as cotton, polyester, or nylon. Typical elongation can exceed several hundred percent, with recovery often over 90 percent after removal of stress.

Common blends and applications: Elastanspandex is widely used in activewear, swimwear, underwear, leggings, and hosiery, as well as compression garments. It is frequently combined with cotton for softness or with polyester or nylon for improved durability and moisture management. The exact composition can vary, but elastane content commonly ranges from around 2% to 20% depending on the desired level of stretch.

Manufacturing and finishing: Elastane/spandex fibers are produced through polyurethane chemistry and are spun into filaments that are incorporated into yarns. Fabrics are then knitted or woven and subjected to finishing processes to optimize hand, weight, and stretch characteristics.

Care and sustainability: Elastanspandex fabrics require standard garment care—cool to warm water washing, gentle cycles, and usually low to moderate heat for drying. They are durable but not always easily recyclable, and some environmental concerns include microfiber shedding and end-of-life disposal.
