Display and control refers to devices or systems that both present information and accept user input to influence a process or device. In automation and instrumentation, a display-and-control unit typically combines a visual interface with input controls and embedded processing to monitor sensors, present status, and actuate equipment. The term covers standalone human-machine interfaces (HMIs), operator panels, and integrated display modules inside equipment.

Common components include a display element (LCD, OLED, or touchscreen), input mechanisms (touch, buttons, knobs, voice), processing hardware (microcontrollers or embedded processors, sometimes PLCs), sensors and actuators, and a communications subsystem (CAN, Modbus, Ethernet/IP, OPC UA) for data exchange with control systems. Software often implements graphical dashboards, alarms, trends, recipes, or control logic, enabling operators to observe conditions and issue commands.

Applications span industrial automation (control panels for machines, process plants), building management (lighting, HVAC control touch panels), transportation and automotive displays, consumer appliances, and laboratory or medical devices. Distinctions exist between display-only interfaces and combined display-and-control units; the latter are capable of executing control actions and running local logic.

Key design considerations include readability and usability, response time, reliability in harsh environments, power consumption, and security. Standards such as ISO 9241 for human-centered design and various industry-specific communication protocols guide development. Trends include multi-modal interfaces, web and mobile HMIs, edge computing, and increased emphasis on cybersecurity and remote monitoring.
