Detrendering refers to the process of converting a rendered image back into its underlying scene description. This is the inverse operation of rendering, which takes a scene description and generates an image. While rendering is a well-established and widely used technique in computer graphics, detrendering is a more nascent and complex area of research.

The primary goal of detrendering is to extract information such as object geometry, material properties, lighting conditions, and camera parameters from a 2D image. This information can then be used for various applications, including scene reconstruction, image editing, virtual reality content creation, and artificial intelligence tasks like object recognition and scene understanding.

Several approaches exist for detrendering, often involving machine learning techniques.
