Desynchronization is the loss or reduction of synchronized timing between two or more oscillatory processes, signals, or activities that would normally operate in step. It can arise in biological systems, engineered systems, or physical processes and can range from partial misalignment to complete disarray of timing.

In biology and medicine, desynchronization often refers to circadian rhythm disruption. When internal clocks become misaligned with the 24-hour day—due to jet travel, shift work, or irregular light exposure—sleep, metabolism, and endocrine function can be affected. Desynchronization can also occur within neural networks, where reduced synchrony among neuronal populations is observed during certain sleep stages, anesthesia, or neurological disorders, potentially altering information processing and behavior. Cardiac desynchronization describes a lack of coordinated contraction between heart chambers, reducing pumping efficiency and contributing to heart failure in some patients.

In computing and engineering, desynchronization refers to timing drift between components that are expected to operate in unison. Clock skew in distributed systems, out-of-phase control signals in hardware, and desynchronized data streams can lead to errors, glitches, or reduced performance. Systems typically use synchronization protocols such as network time protocols (NTP) or phase-locked loops (PLLs) to counteract drift and regain coherence.

Desynchronization can have varying impacts, from benign misalignment to harmful inefficiencies or instability. Management strategies focus on restoring alignment through environmental cues, medical or therapeutic interventions, or robust synchronization mechanisms in technology.
