Desglossades refer to the process of removing or reducing the glossy finish applied to printed materials, images, or documents. The term originates from the combination of the Latin word "des" (meaning removal) and the French "gloss" (glossy surface). In publishing, film and video production, and graphic design, desglossage techniques are employed when a matte or less reflective surface is desired for aesthetic, functional, or practical reasons.

In printing, a glossy finish is typically achieved by applying a clear coating that enhances color saturation, contrast, and durability. Desglossing may be performed after printing to cover the glossy layer with a matt or satin coating, or by optically smoothing the surface with an emulsion that reduces specular reflectance. Photographic studios sometimes desgloss photographs to reduce glare when viewed under bright lighting or when the print is used in galleries.

The digital context also uses the term, especially in image editing software. Here, desglossing involves applying filters or adjustments that emulate a matte finish, such as lowering the sheen, changing the highlight intensity, or adding texture overlays that scatter light. These adjustments are useful for preparing images for screen display, where high gloss may cause glare and reduce visibility.

Desglossades are contrasted with glossatored surfaces, which emphasize shine for a premium or reflective effect. In fields such as interior design or automotive manufacturing, desglossed finishes can reduce fingerprints, maintain color consistency under diverse lighting, and provide a more subdued aesthetic. The technique remains a versatile tool across sectors where visual clarity, tactile feel, or brand image necessitate the control of surface reflectivity.
