In Indonesian and Malay usage, the term desainer is borrowed from the English word designer and denotes a person who applies aesthetics and function to communicate ideas, brands, or experiences.

Typical responsibilities include interpreting briefs, researching, generating concepts, making sketches and mockups, refining proposals, and delivering final designs or specifications. Designers balance aesthetics, usability, feasibility, and cost, and often collaborate with engineers, developers, marketers, and suppliers. They may also develop branding guidelines, style guides, and design systems to ensure consistency across media.

Education and skills commonly include a design degree and a strong portfolio. Proficiency with design software such as the Adobe Creative Suite, CAD and 3D modelling, plus knowledge of production processes, are typical requirements. The role demands creativity, problem solving, communication, and attention to accessibility and sustainability. Desainers work in studios or agencies, in-house design teams, manufacturing or tech companies, or as freelancers, with specialization by sector or discipline.
