The terms are often distinguished by age and method. Disbudding is typically performed on calves or kids and aims to stop horn growth, usually using caustic agents or hot-iron cauterization. Dehorning is the removal of horns in animals that already possess horn tissue and is commonly done in older calves, cattle, goats, or sheep, sometimes through surgical excision or mechanical methods.

Common methods include mechanical removal with specialized dehorning tools, surgical extraction, thermal cauterization with a hot instrument, or chemical debudding using caustic pastes. Anesthesia or analgesia is recommended or required in many jurisdictions to mitigate pain, and veterinary supervision is advised to minimize complications such as bleeding, infection, or sinus damage. Welfare concerns center on pain, stress, and potential long-term effects on health and behavior.

Alternatives and genetic options are increasingly used. Breeding for polled (hornless) genetics offers a long-term solution, reducing the need for dehorning. Practices and regulations vary by country and region, reflecting ongoing debates about animal welfare, safety, and production efficiency.
