The dachshund is a small to medium-sized hound breed from Germany, distinguished by its long body and short legs. It was developed to scent, pursue, and dig into burrows to flush out company such as badgers. The breed’s distinctive silhouette and bold temperament helped it become a versatile working dog in rural regions.

Dachshunds come in two sizes, standard and miniature, with three coat varieties: smooth, longhaired, and wirehaired. Standard dachshunds typically weigh 16 to 32 pounds (7 to 14 kg) and stand about 8 to 9 inches (20 to 23 cm) tall at the withers. Miniature dachshunds usually weigh under 11 pounds (5 kg) and stand around 5 to 6 inches (12 to 15 cm) tall. Coat colors and patterns vary, including solid, brindle, and combinations such as red and black-and-tan.

Temperament is confident and curious, often described as stubborn or outspoken. They are lively, alert, and can form strong bonds with their families. Proper socialization and training are important; they may be reserved with strangers and require consistent, positive methods. Their prey drive and digging instinct can influence exercise and activity choices.

Health considerations include a predisposition to back problems, particularly intervertebral disc disease, due to the breed’s long spine. Other concerns can include dental issues and obesity if overfed or under-exercised. Regular veterinary care, weight management, proper conditioning, and environmental safety (to prevent jumping from heights) help maintain well-being. Dachshunds typically live about 12 to 16 years.
