Comportamentos (behaviors) refer to the observable actions and reactions of a living being in response to stimuli, internal states, or social situations. They include motor movements, vocalizations, facial expressions, posture, and even physiological responses that can be measured or inferred in study. While thinking and mood are internal, behavior provides a tangible record used across fields to understand function, learning, and adaptation.

Behaviors are often categorized as innate or learned. Innate behaviors are inborn and typically triggered by specific stimuli, such as reflexes. Learned behaviors develop through experience, practice, observation, and reinforcement, enabling adaptation to changing environments. Researchers also distinguish between automatic, reflexive actions and deliberate, goal-directed behavior, though real-world actions may involve both.

Several factors influence behavior, including genetics, development, environmental context, culture, social norms, and prior experiences. Motivation, rewards, and punishments can shape frequent patterns of action. In humans, cognitive processes can mediate behavior, but behavior is still observable and measurable, which allows empirical study.

Study methods combine observation, experimentation, and analysis of sequences and contexts. Behavioral data are quantified by metrics such as frequency, duration, latency, intensity, and coordination. In animals, ethology emphasizes natural settings; in humans, psychology and neuroscience integrate lab experiments with real-world observations.

Applications span education, clinical psychology, animal welfare, human-computer interaction, and organizational behavior. Limitations include the variability of behavior across contexts and individuals, the challenge of inferring mental states from action, and ethical considerations in research and intervention.
