Burkulma is a Finnish term used in technical contexts to describe a deformation in which a body or structure loses its straight, flat, or original form due to bending or instability. In engineering, burkulma is commonly equated with buckling, the onset of lateral deflection or instability under compressive stress.

In engineering and materials science, burkulma arises when slender geometry, high compressive loads, material imperfections, or boundary conditions that permit lateral movement reduce a structure’s ability to resist deformation. Common forms include Euler buckling of columns, lateral-torsional buckling of beams, and local buckling of plates along edges.
