Strength-to-weight, often referred to as specific strength, is a material property defined as the strength of a material divided by its density. In structural design, the choice of material balances how strong it is against how heavy it is; a higher strength-to-weight ratio means more load-bearing capacity for a given mass.

The relevant strength measure can be tensile strength, yield strength, or compressive strength, depending on the expected loading. Specific strength is calculated as σ/ρ, where σ is the chosen strength and ρ is the density. The resulting units are typically interpreted as energy per mass (J/kg) or, equivalently, m^2/s^2.

Applications of strength-to-weight considerations are prominent in aerospace, automotive, and sports equipment, where weight reduction improves efficiency and performance. Materials with high specific strength include carbon fiber-reinforced polymers, aluminum and titanium alloys, high-strength steels, and some advanced ceramics. In practice, designers weigh the benefits of a high ratio against other factors such as stiffness, toughness, fatigue resistance, temperature stability, manufacturability, and cost.

Limitations include the fact that a high strength-to-weight ratio does not alone determine suitability for a given application. Real-world performance also depends on properties like stiffness, damage tolerance, environmental durability, and long-term reliability, as well as design margins and manufacturing constraints.
