Branddempende describes materials, coatings or constructions that are designed to slow down, limit or prevent the spread of fire. The term is often used for products that reduce flame propagation, heat release and smoke production, thereby improving overall fire safety. Branddempende performance is not the same as fireproofing; effectiveness depends on factors such as material thickness, installation, and exposure conditions.

The fire-dampening effect arises through several mechanisms. Some materials form a protective char layer when heated, others swell (intumescent systems) to create an insulating barrier, and some release endothermic gases or dilute flammable constituents. Common categories include intumescent coatings (for surfaces and structures), flame-retardant textiles, and fire-resistant construction materials such as mineral wool, gypsum boards, and cementitious boards. Cables and electrical components may also be designed with fire-dampening jackets or casings.

Applications span many sectors. In construction, branddempende materials are used in walls, floors, ceilings and cladding to slow fire growth. In electrical and electronics, flame-retardant plastics and coatings help limit ignition. Transportation sectors, including rail and automotive, employ fire-dampening materials in interiors and components. Textiles for curtains and upholstery are treated to reduce flame spread.

Fire performance is typically evaluated using standardized tests and classifications, such as EN 13501-1 in Europe, NFPA 701 for textiles, and UL 94 for plastics. Classification results indicate relative fire behavior rather than absolute fireproofing.

Limitations include variable performance under different conditions and potential generation of toxic gases with some retardants.
