Battra is a fictional giant insect-like kaiju in Toho’s Godzilla franchise, introduced in the 1992 film Godzilla vs. Mothra. Created as a darker, ecological counterpart to Mothra, Battra is depicted as a guardian of Earth’s natural balance who rises in response to ecological threats and humanity’s encroachment on the environment.

The character exists in two life stages. Battra Larva is the early, larval form with a rugged, black exoskeleton and a more compact, segmented body. The mature form, known simply as Battra (the imago), has larger, membranous wings and a sleeker, darker appearance. Both forms wield energy-based attacks and other elemental abilities, and are presented as powerful defenders of the planet, though their methods can be aggressive and confrontational.

In the storyline, Battra is awakened by ancient guardians to counter ecological danger and often clashes with Godzilla during the film’s events. While initially antagonistic toward humans and Godzilla, Battra’s overarching role is to protect Earth’s ecological equilibrium. The interactions between Battra and Mothra emphasize a thematic tension between ecological stewardship and the risks of drastic, forceful intervention.

Beyond the original film, Battra has appeared in various Toho media, including some video games and related merchandise, contributing to its status as a recognizable figure within the Kaiju genre.
