The avulsed bone fragment is essentially a piece of the bone that has been fractured off due to the strong pull of the soft tissue.

The mechanism of injury typically involves an abrupt and forceful contraction of a muscle or a sudden stretch of a ligament. For instance, a forceful hamstring contraction during sprinting can cause an avulsion fracture at the ischial tuberosity, where the hamstring muscles originate. Similarly, a rapid dorsiflexion of the foot can lead to an avulsion fracture of the anterior inferior tibiofibular ligament at the tibia.

Symptoms of avulsiofraktaatioille often include sudden, sharp pain at the site of injury, swelling, bruising, and difficulty moving the affected limb. In some cases, a palpable deformity or a "popping" sensation may be felt at the time of the injury.
