Asfalttilstand refers to the condition of asphalt pavement surfaces and their structural performance. It describes how well the asphalt concrete and the underlying layers resist cracking, deformation, moisture damage and wear. Condition assessment combines visual inspections with measurements of distress and roughness. Distress types commonly observed include transverse and longitudinal cracking, alligator cracking, rutting in wheel paths, potholes, ravelling (loss of aggregate), stripping (loss of asphalt-aggregate adhesion due to moisture), bleeding and polishing, edge cracking and settlement. The overall condition is usually summarized with a pavement condition index or pavement distress index that supports maintenance planning.

Assessment methods involve routine road inspections and non-destructive testing such as falling weight deflectometer (FWD) to evaluate structural capacity, ground-penetrating radar (GPR) for layer thickness and moisture content, and infrared thermography to identify moisture and temperature anomalies. Field and laboratory tests for moisture susceptibility and aging of binders are also used. Data from these assessments feed pavement management systems to prioritize repairs and optimize lifecycle costs.

Causes and factors contributing to asfalttilstand include aging and oxidation of the asphalt binder, moisture ingress, inadequate drainage, high traffic loading, poor initial compaction or mix design, and climate effects such as freeze-thaw cycles.

Maintenance and rehabilitation options range from preventive maintenance (crack sealing, chip sealing, micro-surfacing, seal coats) to partial-depth repairs, milling and resurfacing, and full-depth rehabilitation or overlays when structural capacity is insufficient. Decisions are guided by condition indices, traffic demands, and budget.
